At a side-event co-organised by Austria and the Permanent Secretariat in the EU Pavilion on 7 December, Deputy Secretary General Marianna Elmi moderated a discussion on climate change mitigation priorities and measures in mountain areas in Europe, the Hindu Kush Himalayas and globally.
Secretary General Ambassador Markus Reiterer introduced the upcoming Alpine Convention Climate Target System 2050 and 7th Report on the State of the Alps on Risk Governance in the context of natural hazards at a further side-event, focusing on mountain regions’ adaptation to climate change, co-organised on International Mountain Day by Austria and UNEP.
The situation in mountain areas in different regions of the world differ vastly, but they share common issues, such as the role of forests in climate change mitigation and the need for a careful water management to achieve resilience.
“Communicating on climate change in an empowering way as well as working hand in hand with the young generation – such as with YPAC, which will focus its 2019 session in Merano/Meran on the topic of climate change – are key to overcoming the challenges we face”, concluded Reiterer.
