Saying goodbye to one of the founders of the Alpine Convention

It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the passing of Klaus Töpfer, former German Environment Minister and one of the key figures in the creation of the Alpine Convention.

In 1989, in his role as German Environment Minister, Klaus Töpfer invited the environment ministers of the Alpine countries to the first Alpine Conference in Berchtesgaden, Germany. The resolution of the Conference contained the provisions for further cooperation between the Alpine countries on topics of relevance, and was the prelude to the drafting of the Alpine Convention.

As the team of the Permanent Secretariat, and on behalf of the whole Alpine Convention family, we express our condolences to Mr Töpfer’s family.
