Ground:breaking
The project aims to advance unsealing and upgrading of soils in urban and peri-urban areas in the Alpine region. Unsealing can restore soil functions in the long term, which will contribute to biodiversity conservation. However, unsealing projects often conflict with other user interests, particularly in urban areas. Scientific findings on sparing use, balancing competing usage requirements, and on unsealing soils in heavily used areas will be drawn on to help maintain healthy soils and use them sustainably. The project also envisages concrete implementation measures in selected regions (four model processes) and a competition on best practices.
The project is financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection.
